In 1996, we would have two large adjoining AYM rooms after knocking down several walls separating many small areas at Countryside. The new All-Year-Montessori class would occupy 1950 square feet…
In my training, it was quite clear that we as guides, were responsible for providing a “Prepared Environment” Well, this became a challenge in an All-Day class; there was no Prep time. So I naturally had the children begin to do the tasks we typically did (wet sponges, cut the paper towels, and place art paper). This implementation brought a stronger bond with the environment, and it WAS theirs. Now, this isn’t special to All-Day; any class could and should be doing the same things.
Now, it may be the number of hours spent together. Of course, relationships will grow stronger when you spend more than fifty hours a week together. But it really is more than that. The children not only feel a connection to each other, but they also feel a sense of ownership of their environment.
